DENVER, Colo. (247marketnews.com) — Vivani Medical (NASDAQ:VANI) has taken another step toward advancing its long-acting obesity treatment platform by entering into an agreement with Novo Nordisk, one of the global leaders in GLP-1 therapies. Under the agreement, Novo Nordisk will conduct a non-exclusive internal evaluation of Vivani’s investigational semaglutide implant, NPM-139, highlighting growing industry interest in alternative drug delivery technologies for chronic weight management.

The collaboration centers on NPM-139, an investigational implant developed using Vivani’s proprietary NanoPortal
platform. Unlike weekly GLP-1 injections, the implant is being designed to deliver semaglutide continuously over extended periods, with the goal of offering patients a once- or twice-yearly treatment option while allowing therapy to be discontinued if necessary. The agreement does not grant exclusivity to Novo Nordisk, leaving Vivani free to pursue additional partnerships involving NPM-139 or its NanoPortal technology.
The announcement comes as the global obesity treatment market continues to expand rapidly, driven by strong demand for GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide. While these medicines have transformed obesity treatment, long-term adherence remains a challenge. Vivani’s strategy is to address that issue through sustained drug delivery, potentially reducing the burden of frequent injections and improving treatment consistency for patients requiring chronic therapy.
Vivani also outlined its near-term clinical roadmap. The company expects to begin a Phase 1 first-in-human study of NPM-139 in mid-2026, comparing the implant with Wegovy® injections. The study will evaluate safety, pharmacokinetics, and tolerability, with successful results expected to support progression into a Phase 2 dose-ranging trial. As with any investigational therapy, regulatory approval will depend on future clinical outcomes demonstrating safety and efficacy.
Beyond this specific program, the agreement reflects broader pharmaceutical interest in innovative drug delivery platforms. As GLP-1 therapies become increasingly established for obesity and metabolic disease, companies are exploring technologies that may improve patient convenience, adherence, and long-term outcomes. Vivani’s NanoPortal platform is intended to support extended-release implants for multiple metabolic indications, including obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Investors should note that Novo Nordisk’s evaluation agreement is not a commercialization partnership, licensing deal, or commitment to future collaboration. Nevertheless, the willingness of a leading GLP-1 developer to evaluate Vivani’s technology provides external validation of the platform’s potential and places additional attention on the company’s long-acting implant strategy as clinical development progresses.
