Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev defended the brokerage’s tokenized-stock products after AMC Entertainment criticized the practice for creating exposure to its shares without the company’s involvement. Tenev argued that public companies retain control over the rights attached to their shares but cannot prevent other institutions from issuing separate financial products that reference them.

Robinhood’s stock tokens are structured as debt securities backed by underlying shares rather than direct ownership of those shares. Token holders do not receive shareholder voting rights, and the company has not announced how it intends to exercise the voting power associated with the underlying securities.

Investor Sentiment

Tokenized equities could broaden access to stock-linked exposure and allow trading through blockchain-based platforms, creating opportunities for brokerages and digital-asset companies. The products may also introduce new markets and trading hours without requiring issuers to modify their existing share structures.

Investors remain focused on unresolved questions involving voting rights, custody, disclosure and issuer consent. Regulators and public companies may seek clearer standards as tokenized products expand, particularly if investors misunderstand the distinction between owning a stock token and holding the underlying shares directly.
