eBay will eliminate approximately 1,000 jobs, representing about 9% of its workforce, as the online marketplace streamlines operations and directs resources toward its fastest-growing businesses. The reduction follows an earlier round of roughly 800 layoffs in February, making this the company’s second major workforce cut of the year.
The restructuring comes as eBay increases spending on artificial intelligence and integrates Depop, the clothing resale platform it acquired from Etsy for $1.4 billion. The company said it will continue hiring in strategic priority areas while reducing positions elsewhere to improve organizational focus and operating efficiency.

Investor Sentiment
eBay’s share-price gain suggests investors viewed the layoffs as a step toward lower costs and a more focused operating structure. Continued reductions, however, may also reflect the difficulty of generating sustained growth in a competitive e-commerce market dominated by larger platforms and increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
Investors will watch whether the Depop acquisition helps eBay attract younger shoppers and expand in the growing resale category. Progress in AI-driven discovery, advertising and seller tools could also determine whether the company’s restructuring produces stronger revenue growth rather than relying primarily on expense reductions.
