The NBA suspended Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer for one year after an investigation found that the team circumvented salary-cap rules involving Kawhi Leonard’s off-court income opportunities. The league also imposed a record $30 million fine and stripped the Clippers of five first-round draft picks beginning in 2029.
Investigators said the Clippers facilitated endorsement opportunities between Leonard and four companies that conducted business with the team, including Aspiration Partners, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics and Lockton Insurance. The Clippers rejected the findings and said they intend to challenge the sanctions through arbitration.

Investor Sentiment
The sanctions highlight the reputational and compliance risks surrounding commercial relationships between professional teams, players and corporate partners. Businesses participating in sports sponsorships may face greater scrutiny over whether endorsement arrangements are independent transactions or connected to team contracts and compensation.
The selected companies have limited direct financial exposure to the penalties, and their mixed performance likely reflects broader market factors. Investors will nevertheless monitor the Clippers’ expected challenge and any additional disclosures concerning the corporate agreements cited by investigators.
