Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas gigafactory around mid-2027 to create additional manufacturing capacity for the Cybercab robotaxi. CEO Elon Musk did not indicate whether Cybertruck production would move to another facility, leaving the vehicle’s longer-term future uncertain.
The Cybertruck developed a dedicated following but failed to reach the mass-market volumes Tesla initially envisioned. Cox Automotive estimated that U.S. sales fell 48% to 20,237 vehicles last year, while the 2024 model was subject to 11 voluntary recalls. SpaceX also emerged as a major buyer, purchasing $131 million of Cybertrucks during the year.

- Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL): $288.22, up $5.65 (2.00%)

Investor Sentiment
Tesla’s gain suggests investors welcomed the decision to redirect capacity from a low-volume pickup toward a product central to the company’s autonomous-driving strategy. The shift could improve factory utilization if Cybercab demand develops as expected, but it also underscores the gap between Musk’s original Cybertruck sales targets and the vehicle’s actual performance.
The Cybercab expansion raises the competitive stakes for Alphabet’s Waymo and Uber’s autonomous-vehicle partnerships, while Rivian may benefit from reduced competition in the electric pickup market. Investors will watch Cybercab production costs, regulatory approvals and commercial deployment timelines for evidence that the robotaxi business can justify Tesla’s manufacturing pivot.
