Burger King is turning to smaller, locally based franchisees as it works to revitalize its U.S. business and move toward a more asset-light operating model. Parent company Restaurant Brands International expects to sell about 200 company-operated restaurants to franchisees by the end of 2026, prioritizing owners who live near their locations and remain actively involved in daily operations.

The refranchising initiative is part of a broader turnaround focused on stronger marketing, improved food quality and modernized restaurants. Burger King recently surpassed Wendy’s as the second-largest U.S. burger chain by system sales and reported domestic same-store sales growth of 8.5% in its latest quarter. Restaurant Brands ultimately plans to retain about 300 company-operated locations, with franchisees running most of the chain’s more than 6,000 U.S. restaurants.

  • Wendy’s Co. (NASDAQ: WEN): $6.27, up $0.022 (0.36%)
  • McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD): $231.05, down $0.78 (0.34%)

Investor Sentiment

Refranchising could strengthen Restaurant Brands’ financial profile by generating cash from restaurant sales, reducing corporate operating requirements and increasing its reliance on recurring franchise royalties. Locally invested operators may also produce stronger restaurant-level results, but the deliberate selection process means investors may need to wait several years for the full benefits to emerge.

Burger King’s recent sales momentum is encouraging as inflation, high interest rates and uneven customer traffic continue to pressure restaurant operators. Investors will be watching franchisee profitability, remodeling progress and traffic growth for evidence that the chain’s comeback can remain durable while competing with McDonald’s, Wendy’s and other major quick-service brands.
