Synchrony Financial is partnering with OpenAI to enable consumers to make purchases directly within ChatGPT using store-branded credit cards. Synchrony issues cards for major retailers including Amazon, Walmart and Lowe’s, positioning the lender to connect promotional financing, rewards and retailer offers with AI-assisted shopping.
Synchrony expects integrating general-purpose cards into ChatGPT to take approximately six to 12 months, with private-label cards potentially requiring more time and coordination. The company is also launching a ChatGPT plugin for browsing marketplace deals and discussing similar payment integrations with competing artificial intelligence platforms.

Investor Sentiment
The partnership represents an early step toward agentic commerce, in which consumers can discover, finance and purchase products without leaving an AI platform. Successful integration could create new transaction opportunities for lenders, payment networks and retailers while making store-branded cards more relevant within emerging digital shopping channels.
Investor enthusiasm may remain measured until companies resolve concerns involving payment security, consumer trust and the division of transaction fees. Market participants will also monitor adoption rates and competing platforms to determine whether in-chat purchasing becomes a meaningful commerce channel or remains a limited convenience for select users.
