Hyundai is expected to outsell Ford on a quarterly basis for the first time, according to a Cox Automotive forecast. Hyundai, including Genesis and Kia, is projected to increase third-quarter U.S. sales by 6.5% to 511,421 vehicles, while Ford’s sales are expected to fall 7.1% to 504,172 units.

Toyota is also narrowing the annual sales gap with market leader General Motors as buyers increasingly favor fuel-efficient vehicles. Analysts said limited hybrid offerings are hurting Detroit automakers while gasoline prices near $4.48 per gallon weigh on demand for the large trucks and SUVs central to their product portfolios.

  • Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM): $186.74, down $3.62 (1.90%)

Investor Sentiment

Declines across most major automakers reflect concern about shifting consumer preferences, elevated fuel costs and uneven vehicle availability. Manufacturers with broad hybrid lineups may be better positioned to capture customers seeking efficiency without transitioning entirely to electric vehicles.

Investors will monitor whether Ford and General Motors accelerate their hybrid strategies or continue emphasizing larger gasoline-powered vehicles. Production reliability, fuel prices and product mix will remain critical as Hyundai and Toyota challenge the traditional U.S. sales hierarchy.
