DENVER, Colo. (247marketnews.com) — FIRY (NYSE:FIRY), formerly known as Skillz, secured a major legal victory that could have significant implications for the competitive mobile gaming industry. The company announced that the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ordered Papaya Gaming to disgorge $719 million in profits to FIRY’s wholly owned subsidiary, Skillz Platform, following a false advertising lawsuit. The judgment increases the recovery by nearly $300 million above the $420 million jury award issued in April 2026 and represents one of the largest false advertising judgments under the Lanham Act.

The ruling follows a unanimous federal jury verdict that found Papaya’s advertising to be false. According to court findings cited by FIRY, evidence presented during trial showed that between 2021 and 2024, Papaya advertised approximately $6.7 billion in prize money, but roughly $4.7 billion of those advertised prizes were never paid to customers because automated bots, rather than human players, won many of the contests. The company alleged that more than 13 million bot participants competed against approximately 11 million human players, forming the basis of the false advertising claims that ultimately resulted in the judgment.

The court rejected Papaya’s post-trial motions challenging the jury’s verdict and awarded FIRY approximately $10 million in attorneys’ fees for 2024 and 2025, along with certain litigation costs related to discovery proceedings. A separate ruling addressing FIRY’s request for injunctive relief is still pending. While the judgment is substantial, FIRY noted that collection efforts remain subject to potential appeals and additional legal proceedings, meaning the ultimate timing and amount of any recovery remain uncertain.

Beyond the courtroom, the decision arrives during a broader transformation for FIRY. The company recently rebranded from Skillz to FIRY, positioning itself as a diversified holding company spanning competitive gaming, performance marketing, and game infrastructure through businesses including Skillz, RZR, and Beamable. Rather than relying solely on its original tournament platform, FIRY is building an ecosystem that combines player identity, payments, backend gaming infrastructure, AI-driven marketing, and live-service technologies designed to support game developers throughout the product lifecycle.

The case also highlights the growing importance of trust and transparency in competitive mobile gaming. As real-money skill-based gaming continues to expand, operators face increasing scrutiny over how competitions are conducted, how prizes are awarded, and how platforms disclose gameplay mechanics to users. Court decisions involving advertising practices may influence future compliance standards across the industry, although the legal process in this matter is not yet fully concluded.
